Jhola nepali movie review : 2023

'Jhola' is a Nepali film adaptation of the popular book by Krishna Dharabasi, set in Nepali society around a century ago. Directed by Yadav Kumar Bhattarai, the movie stars Garima Pant, Desh Bhakta Khanal, Deepak Chhetri, Laxmi Giri, and Pralhad Khatiwada in prominent roles. Produced by Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd., the film underwent extensive research for about seven years to accurately depict the subject matter. The screenplay, written by the late Deepak Alok, stays true to the essence of the book. It can be categorized as a historical art film.

The storyline of 'Jhola' highlights the height of violence against women in ancient Nepal, particularly the Sati tradition. The protagonist, Garima Pant, portrays a young woman forced into marriage with a man 40 years her senior. When her husband passes away, Garima faces the horrifying prospect of being burned alive alongside his body. However, she manages to escape the flames and seeks refuge in a cave. The film delves into Garima's journey and the role her underage son plays in helping her.

Dharabasi based the story on a leaf booklet found in a bag (jhola) left by an elderly man from Manipur, India at his home, hence the title 'Jhola.' The depicted events took place in a remote village in Bhojpur district, while the filming occurred in Dhading after considering several other locations across Nepal, including Sindhuli, Bhojpur, Ilam, Therathum, Panchthar, Sindhupalanchowk, Rolpa, Taplejung, Khaptad, Doti, Achham, Bajhang, and Bajura.

The film's strengths lie in its realistic and historically accurate scenes. It effectively captures the ambiance of East Nepal a century ago, utilizing long shots to provide an authentic view of the era. Traditional tools like dhiki, janto, madani, ranko, and diyalo are featured, contributing to the film's authenticity.

'Jhola' appeals to both younger and older audiences, offering a glimpse into the past for the former and a nostalgic trip for the latter. In addition to depicting the Sati tradition, the film touches upon the issue of slavery (Kamara Kamari).

The cinematography stands out as one of the film's strongest aspects. The director takes great care in presenting the ancient setting, employing traditional lighting methods such as ranko, diyalo, and fireplaces. The characters' costumes are hand-sewn, and the background music consists of leaf music and traditional tunes.

The cast delivers realistic performances, with Garima Pant and the child artist standing out. Other actors also do justice to their roles. Garima, in particular, fell ill after filming a scene in which she swims in a river without taking a bath or applying makeup throughout the shoot, emphasizing the commitment to natural portrayals.

Director Yadav Bhattarai is renowned for directing Nepali music videos, and after directing around 900 of them, he decided to bring the story he had read 11 years prior to the screen. Obtaining permission from Dharabasi in BS 2063, after reading the book in BS 2059, Bhattarai directed the film. The scriptwriter, Deepak Alok, unfortunately passed away four years before the movie's release.

In conclusion, 'Jhola' is a historical film that offers a glimpse into the past and sheds light on the violence against women in ancient times. Beyond its entertainment value, the movie provides insights into history, culture, and traditions. While it may have its flaws, 'Jhola' is a commendable historical film.

However, if you prefer movies with action, singing, dancing, and lightheartedness, 'Jhola' may not be your ideal choice.
